Meet Our Models - Shade

Models don’t always get the amount of love and credit they deserve. An item of clothing could look amazing hanging up in your closet but chances are, you bought that shirt or dress or the entire outfit because of how it was modeled, whether by yourself (shout out to fitting rooms) or that person who was hired to give the outfit some life.

We are dedicating this segment to the models who so generously lent us their time and good vibes to bring our pieces to life. You'll get a peak into who they are and their interests as they relate to African fashion. So, without further ado, we introduce to you, Shade.

1) What’s your background (where are you originally from)?
I am half Haitian & half Belgian.
2) When was the last time you been to your country, if at all?
3 years ago, but I used to go every summer when I didn't have school and work.
3) Before being introduced to our brand, what was your experience with African print/traditional African clothing?
I always been attracted to African print, but it was pretty hard to find nice pieces at affordable prices. I think I have maybe 3 pieces.
4) What attracts you to this type of clothing?
The colors are something I really like about African clothing and the fact that you embrace and represent a beautiful culture.
5) If you had to pick just 1 favorite piece from the Shakara stock thus far, which one would it be?
I will go for the Buki Kimono for sure. (Please note this item was a 1 of 1 and is out of stock)
6) What are some places you could see yourself wearing Shakara?
I think I could wear Shakara everywhere. You can make it casual, but classy too.
7) How do you feel about the fact that you're a Haitian woman representing a brand that is not part of your immediate heritage?
I honestly do believe that even if it's not our immediate heritage, it is still a heritage we should embrace and be proud of because at the end of the day, we are all African.
8) How do you feel you might be perceived by the Haitian community?
I'm not a person that really cares about how people perceive me.
9) What’s one thing you want everyone reading right now to take away about you aside from your love for Shakara?
Travel as much as you can, open yourself up to learning about the cultures of the places you visit, and be open minded.
We hope you take us with you on your journeys @shadou_. Go check out some of the sights from her travels!
